During the festive period last year (December 19, 2013 – January 6, 2014), firefighters attended 50 road traffic collisions, rescuing 64 people with 85 people being injured.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dale Ashford continued: “We would also remind drivers to take extra care on the roads at this time of year. Winter weather conditions, dark nights and increased traffic due to the Christmas rush can make driving dangerous. Never consume alcohol when driving – no matter how short the distance and during severe weather, only make essential journeys.

“Tragically, there have been 73 fatal road traffic collisions across Northern Ireland this year to date. Firefighters witness first-hand the carnage and devastation of road traffic collisions and we work closely with our partner agencies to improve road safety but everyone has a responsibility to behave safely on our roads.

“We are encouraging everyone to take simple but sensible steps to stay fire safe and well prepared for winter weather so that more people right across Northern Ireland have a happy Christmas.”
