Talented Kate from Ballymoney is Blue Peter’s new ‘poster girl’

13-year-old Kate Beattie designed a poster to highlight the fact that Blue Peter badge holders have free access to many of the UK’s top visitor attractions.

And, the Dalriada student and her mum Elaine were flown to Colwyn Bay in Wales to have Kate’s prize presented to her live on television.

Kate, who is a massive fan of Blue Peter and has six different badges from the show, told the Times that she entered the competition at the start of the summer.

“The competition was to encourage people who have Blue Peter badges to use them to get free entry into lots of different attractions as a lot of people don’t know that they can use them like that.

“There are over 200 attractions in the UK where people with Blue Peter badges can get in free so I looked up all the attractions and my idea was to try to respresent them in my poster.

“It took me longer to come up with the idea than to actually draw it.”

Kate was initially told that her poster had made it into the top 15 but then she received a phone call from the Editor of the programme telling her she had won the competition outright.

“My mum and I were flown over to Colwyn Bay where Blue Peter were doing a special programme. I was presented with my orange badge and my poster which will be displayed in the 200 attractions in the UK.”
