Tandem cyclist‘distressed’ bywater attack

The disgraceul incident was revealed by the Royal National Institute of Blind this week as the charity appealed to motorists to exercise caution when encountering blind cyclists.

A spokesperson for RNIB NI said, “During the summer months the roads are especially busy and we would appeal to motorists to please give our cyclists extra room and slow down when over taking and exercise a little extra caution.

“We had an incident were one of our partially sighted members was hit on the face by a water pistol from a passing car while on the back of a tandem.

“As you can imagine this caused great distress to our member and could have very easily caused a serious accident.”

Blind and partially sighted tandem cycle club have been out on the road once again this summer enjoying the good weather, cycling around the triangle area.

The tandem club continues to grow in numbers and meets regularly each week at the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB NI) office on Abbey Street in Coleraine.

The spokesperson explained: ““Getting out every week on the tandems is a great opportunity for our

members and every one of them really enjoy the cycle and they all look forward to getting out.”

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the members from Causeway Cycle Club and Bannwheelers, who give up their time on a weekly basis to help take our members out and pilot the tandems.”
