Tea party boost for charity

The management, staff and residents of Gillaroo Lodge Nursing Home, in Larne, took up the challenge of hosting a fundraising afternoon tea party for Alzheimer’s Society and raised more than £600 for this worthy cause.

Nurse manager Nicola McCrudden said: “I decided to encourage staff and residents to take part in this challenge for Alzheimer’s Society because those of us who work with residents in nursing homes can see at firsthand the effect dementia has on those who suffer from it and their extended family who help care for the sufferer.

“It was a tough challenge, but it was rewarding to know that we were raising funds to help support people to live well with dementia today and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow.

“Everybody took on the challenge and played a part. Our residents helped make the personal invitations and gave them to friends and family.

“The kitchen staff did an excellent job at preparing a mouth-watering array of eats for the occasion.

“Mrs Margaret Boyle, the proprietor, put her craft skills to good use and made a variety of necklaces which were sold at the event, and all staff assisted in numerous ways by helping on the day or inviting friends and family to attend.

“I even managed to persuade my husband to become involved by baking some speciality pastries.

“The afternoon was a huge success with many former relatives of people we had cared for attending, and I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to all who helped in any way.”

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We are delighted that those associated with Gillaroo Lodge Nursing Home gave their time to support Alzheimer’s Society.

“One in three people over 65 will die with dementia. It is caused by diseases of the brain and can happen to anyone.

“As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals to help us continue our vital work.
