Team building activities bring out the best in travel students

TRAVEL and Tourism students at South Eastern Regional College (SERC) Lisburn Campus were thrown in at the deep end at the beginning of their course when they embarked on a three day team building challenge at the Share Centre Lisnaskea.

The cohort of year-one and two students, who barely knew each another before the trip, spent three days carrying out challenging team building activities like abseiling and kayaking.

For many of the students it was their first experience of teambuilding and the experience saw them bond very strongly as a group.

“You can see the difference in class,” agreed course lecturer Catherine Anderson. “They’re all more willing to speak out and participate in group discussions and activities.

“As well as helping the class bond and challenge their fears, the trip underlined the difference between the classroom-based learning students were accustomed to at school, and the more practical collaborative challenges they would face on their new course at SERC.”

Catherine continued: “The trip was a great success with some of the students looking at the possibility to volunteer at the Share Centre during their summer holidays. It gave students the opportunity to identify their strengths as well as weaknesses and highlighted the importance of communication. It has given everyone an insight that they wouldn’t normally see in their day to day activities.

“I’m very happy with the way they’re tackling the course now. There’s a real enthusiasm and buzz in this group as a direct result of getting them out there together.”
