Tearful Phyllis looks back on 14 years in office

For many councillors last Tuesday night’s final meeting was an emotional night - DUP Alderman Phyllis Fielding held back the tears as she recalled her 14 years as a councillor.

Alderman Fielding told those present: “I have enjoyed my 14 years as a councillor of this Borough, since I was elected in June 2001 for the Coleraine East Area.

“At the beginning of my term I had the privilege of meeting HRH Prince Andrew Duke of York as he opened this Council building and ended my term in 2014 with the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and His Royal Highness Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh to Coleraine Town Hall.

“I equally enjoyed and took a particular interest in being a member of the Special Olympics Committee and attended the opening ceremony in Dublin of the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games. I also enjoyed being a member of the NW 200 Committee.

“In 2006 it was an honour for me to serve as Deputy Mayor.

“As I look back over 14 years, I sought to help many people over those years without seeking publicity for doing so. I have also made many good friends within the staff of Coleraine Borough Council. I was happy for them simply to address me as ‘Phyllis’.

“With sadness I remember a number of Councillors who have passed away; as a member of the DUP I particularly remember my colleague, friend and former Party leader James McClure,” she said.
