Teen arrested after male stabbed in church grounds

A 19 year old man has been arrested following an incident on church grounds in the Heights area of Coleraine on Friday night.

At about 10.20pm, a male entered church grounds in the Drumard Drive area and kicked the wing mirror off a parked car.

The male left the area but later returned armed with a knife.

A man, aged in his 60s, was stabbed in the back before the male left the area again. The man required hospital treatment for his injury which is not believed to be life threatening.

The 19 year old man was arrested in the Westbourne Crescent area on the afternoon of Sunday 26 June on suspicion of wounding with intent, common assault, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon. He currently remains in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Glass said: “I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident or any suspicious behaviour in The Heights area between 10pm and 11.20pm on Friday night to contact detectives at Coleraine Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1337 24/06/16.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
