Teen '˜R' driver banned for doing 91mph six weeks after passing test

Sean Micheal Lagan, 18, from Keeragh in Pomeroy, was clocked at the high speed on the Moneymore-Cookstown dual carriageway on the night of December 11.

Mr Jason McLaren, defending, told the court that his client had only passed the test in October.

He described how Lagan - a student at Omagh Tech - had been taking his brother and some friends to Magherafelt on the night in question, calling his speed “inexcusable”.

He asked for credit for his client’s early plea and clean, albeit short, record.

Handing down a fine of £100 as well as the driving disqualification of three months, District Judge John Meehan said: “Male teens in vehicles at egregiously fast speeds are a risk to life and limb of all road users including themselves.”

An offender’s levy of £15 was also imposed by the court.
