Teenager charged after Armagh girl dies in hit-and-run accident

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a hit-and-run accident in which Armagh teenager Lesley-Ann McCarragher was killed.

He is due to appear at Newry Magistrates Court this morning (Monday) and will face additional charges of failing to stop, failing to remain and failing to report, no driving licence and no insurance.

Lesley-Ann (19) was knocked down as she was out jogging on the Monaghan Road, Armagh, shortly after noon on Saturday. She was airlifted to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital but died on Sunday.

The teenager had attended City of Armagh High School before going on to the Royal School Armagh to sit her A-Levels, and then to Loughry College where she was a first year student.

Her uncle John Murray said the teenager was “a friend to all and everyone who met her loved her”.

Principal of City of Armagh High School David Livingstone described Lesley-Ann as a “wonderful young woman” and said staff had “great and very fond memories” of her.

Newry & Armagh DUP MLA William Irwin, who knows the wider family, said it was a very sad situation for Lesley-Ann’s family and passed on his sympathy and prayers.

Lesley-Ann is survived by her mum and dad James and Elizabeth, and sisters Judith, Amy and Beth.

Her funeral will take place on Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Armagh.
