Teens put through paces at fire station

A GROUP of teens linked up with local fire fighters recently to experience first-hand what the job entails.

The eager group - ranging from 14 to 18-years-old - lined up at Ballymoney Fire Station on Monday (16 Jan) and spent five days being put through their paces and learning the ropes from experienced fire fighters.

During the action-packed programme the 13 volunteers took part in a wide range of activities including hose running, ladder work, use of breathing apparatus, First Aid, dealing with road traffic collisions and the daunting tower climb.

Ballymoney Mayor Ian Stevenson paid a visit to see how the group were getting on and praised the venture and those behind it.

On Friday a special passing-out parade was held and presentations distributed to each volunteer.

Watch Commander of Ballymoney and lead instructor on the course, Stephen Cairns, said he was delighted with the attitude of all those who took part.

“They have been absolutely brilliant,” he said.

“Not only do they benefit from the experience but they each take away things which will boost their portfolios when they are looking to enter the workplace.

“They all put the work in and we are very pleased with how the week went.”

The initiative was run in conjunction with the Fire Service, police, Phoenix Youth Agency and Youth Justic Agency.

Course co-ordinator was Steven Shiels.
