Telehouse up and running

A CONTAINER based Telehouse facility is in place and operational at the Project Kelvin point of presence site at Fort George with testing due to take place later this month when the equipment is moved into a special new building provided by ILEX.

Thus stated Investment Minister Arlene Foster when asked by SDLP Foyle MP, MLA Mark Durkan for a progress update on the multi-million pound Hibernia Atlantic project that will speed internet and broadband speed and capacity in Londonderry.

The Minister explained: "Project Kelvin is very close to completion with telecommunications facilities in place and operational at each of the 13 locations specified in the contract.

"At the Fort George site work is underway to transfer the equipment currently located in a container based Telehouse facility into a new building being provided by ILEX. This should be completed by the end March/early April 2010.

"Testing of the overall network started in December 2009 and will continue until end March 2010 or completion of the Telehouse.

Mr Durkan said he was delighted to see the project close to completion and that the telehouse will provide a platform for investment and the development of service markets in the city.

"As an attractive driver for economic growth and inward investment, this is a huge opportunity for the North West economy and a fitting start to the Fort George development.

"It will deliver a major boost to local businesses, and comes at an important time as they work their way through this downturn and make plans to capitalise on the economic recovery when it comes."
