Temple residents are in ‘fear for their lives’

TEMPLE; Residents in the area are campaigning for new road safety measures to be introduced in the area, saying they ‘fear for their lives’.

Local people are calling on Roads Service to install a footpath on the Saintfield Road towards the Temple crossroads, as well as a traffic island on the main Belfast road.

The crossroads at Temple are notoriously busy and residents say they fear for their lives when walking on or attempting to cross the road.

Local councillor Paul Stewart has been lobbying Roads Service on behalf of the residents.

“I met with local residents recently regarding their concerns within the local Temple area,” said Mr Stewart. “Residents have requested a footpath for the Saintfield Road (300 yards of footpath) to Temple Crossroads. This stretch of road is extremely busy and therefore very dangerous for local residents walking to the local shops at the Temple Crossroads.

“In addition, it is tremendously dangerous for local people crossing the main Belfast road,” he continued. “This road is very wide and the volume of traffic is very high and therefore, some residents fear for their lives when crossing this main road.

“They have also requested a traffic island be erected in the middle of the main Belfast Road at the Temple Crossroads, to allow residents, which include children, to cross the road in a save manner.

“I have met with Mr Eamonn McMahon, Section Engineer for the Roads Service on site to discuss their concerns. The Roads Service will carry out all the necessary traffic surveys in relation to the residents’ request and in the meantime we will continue to lobby the Roads Service regarding this issue,” he concluded.
