Tesco confirm 'Extra' store

TESCO yesterday confirmed that it remains committed to plans to deliver a new, modern Tesco Extra store in Coleraine with work expected to start work early next year.

This multi-million pound investment in the town centre will create approximately 250 new retail jobs for the local community, which are in addition to those already employed in the current store.

Colin Hampsey, corporate affairs manager for Tesco Northern Ireland, said; "At a time of economic uncertainty, this proposal represents a multi-million pound investment in the town, which I hope is still welcomed by the local community.

"This development will boost the overall economy of Coleraine and increase local employment through the creation of numerous retail and construction positions, the generation of significant annual wages, and the prospect of long-term career opportunities for people of all ages."

Mr Hampsey added: "There will be a variety of positions available, ranging from shop floor assistants to managers. Tesco also offers one of the highest basic pay rates in the retail industry, complemented by an excellent benefits package.

"We are fully committed to bringing an enhanced Tesco to Coleraine, which will give our customers a wider range of high-quality products than is currently available.

"We believe a new store will complement the shops already beside us in the town centre and encourage customers to stay in the area and continue shopping with other traders, cementing Coleraine as a fantastic retail destination," he added.

The application also includes free car-parking for over 500 vehicles, as well as dedicated spaces for parents with children and those with disabilities.

During the construction a temporary store will be provided to ensure convenient shopping for the local community and it is hoped that this location will be finalised in the near future.

In keeping with their environmental commitments and objective of being a carbon neutral business by 2050, Tesco has recently made slight amendments to their application, which will shortly be submitted to Planning Service.

These include the addition of wind-catchers on the roof of the store to provide effective natural ventilation. Other environmental features will also be incorporated into the design of the store, such as energy-efficient refrigeration units and specially designed windows to maximise natural light.

Mr Hampsey went on: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the local residents, elected representatives and Coleraine Borough Council for all their feedback and support so far.

"Tesco strives to play a pro-active and positive role in the community and has already supported various local initiatives including the NI International Airshow of which Tesco is this year's main sponsor. We look forward to working further with the community in the development and regeneration of the town."
