Tesco confirms scrapping of filling station in new plan

TESCO has submitted revised layout plans for roads around their Bentrim Street store to support their application for a major expansion.

City Councillors at this week's monthly meeting welcomed the submission which includes the removal of the Petrol Filling Station.

The new plans have yet to be received by Roads Service who will have to approve them as part of the planning process.

Referring to last week Special Meeting of the Planning Committee at which objectors, Tesco and the planners were all present, Councillor Jonathan Craig said: "A number of issues were raised at that meeting. One of the main issues was roads in the area, particularly the exit road onto the roundabout. Roads Service were adamant that a new set of plans for the road layout must be submitted and Tesco have now put in new plans."

He added: "Under the new expansion the road infrastructure would be under huge pressure. The concern was that Tesco would renege on doing away with the petrol station, bringing roads chaos, and we do welcome that these plans have been submitted. That will go a small way to help improve the road layout and go a small way to alleviate the concerns of the residents."

Mr Craig said this was a "major step forward" and praised the actions of Roads Service in securing the new drawings.

He said: "This is a direct consequence of Roads Service and Planning Service being adamant that there would be no approval until new plans were submitted. In fairness to Roads Service, they did the right thing in this case."
