Tesco set to unveil £40m Waterside plans

LONDONDERRY will get a glimpse of what a proposed £40m state-of-the-art revamp of Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre will look like when retail giant Tesco unveils its plans with a public exhibition this Friday.

The retailer's plans for the Waterside shopping centre will see the creation of approximately 200 new retail jobs on top of approximately 300 construction jobs that will be sustained whilst the centre is being built.

A public exhibition will be held in Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre on Friday between 11am and 5pm in order to display plans for the rebuild of the centre, which includes a modern, spacious Tesco Extra supermarket.

A planning application for the scheme was recently submitted and Tesco is keen to showcase its plans for this state-of-the-art development and its benefits for the local area.

Colin Hampsey, corporate affairs manager for Tesco said: "I would encourage local people to call in anytime between 11.00am to 5.00pm. Our plans will be on display and Tesco representatives will be available to answer any questions.

"Currently Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre is out-dated and does not offer the full range of services that are available in more modern shopping complexes.

"By rebuilding the Centre we aim to provide a state-of-the-art retail development with modern convenient shopping, right at the gateway to the City and we hope this would encourage visitors to stay and see more."

Mr Hampsey continued: "As part of any application process, we consult with local residents, local elected representatives, planning authorities and any other interested parties.

"An important stage of this is to gain the views of the local community and inform them of our plans and we hope to hear what local people think on Friday 26 February."

The retailer already employs more than 550 people across Londonderry and has stores in Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre, Quayside Shopping Centre on Strand Road and an Express store at Crescent Link.

Mr Hampsey added: "Importantly, at this time of economic uncertainty and with so many people seeking extra value and savings on their weekly shop, this proposed redevelopment represents an important investment of more than 40 million in the Waterside area.

"The new Tesco store alone will create up to 200 new, high-quality retail jobs, as well as approximately 300 construction positions during the construction of the shopping centre."
