The Banbridge Banksy

THE internationally famous graffiti artist Banksy may have some competition - although he shouldn’t be losing any sleep.

Somebody has been imitating the Banksy style of graffiti, which usually tends to make a social or political comment, around Banbridge.

Banksy made fame with his trademark stencil-style art in public spaces such as walls in London, Brighton, Bristol, New York and even on the West Bank barrier separating Israelis and Palestinians. Banksy’s work can be sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds and he has dozens of celebrity collector including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Christina Aguilera.

Black stencils of CCTV Cameras have been seen at Gospel Lane, near Solitude Park, and several prints of famous pop stars such as Amy Winehouse and Eminem have been spotted on the wall of a building in Bridge street. There are captions underneath the Prints. The one under Eminem states “Don’t ever let anyone tell you you ain’t beautiful.”

Some of the graffiti has been there for some time but others pieces like the CCTV camera are slighlty more recent.

Banbridge District Council has been notified of the graffiti around the town and David Lindsay, Director of Environmental Services at Banbridge District Council, said the graffiti will be removed as soon as possible.

“We endeavour to try and remove graffiti as soon as it is reported to us as a little bit tends to breed more in most cases. We will also try to follow up our investigations with CCTV footage and see if we can pick anything up from that. If any reader should have any information do not hesitate to give us a call and we will do our best to catch whoever is responsible for this.”
