The Bible App: The Bible on the move

Historically, the Bible has been viewed primarily as a book; until now.

Over the past five years, Bible Societies around the world have been working with an Online partner called YouVersion to make the text of Scripture available to a new generation. Now it is available as a free download to smart phones and tablets in 444 languages and in 700 versions.

The Bible Society in Northern Ireland is holding a special event in the City Hall, Belfast on the morning of Monday, November 4, to celebrate, not only this remarkable achievement, but also to recognise the new addition of the Irish Bible (in three versions) and Luke’s Gospel in Ulster-Scots. Now in addition to the 115 million free Bibles have been downloaded, it will be possible for people here to access Scripture that has a particular local resonance.

Among the eight Bible readers at the City Hall event will be the Lord Mayor of Belfast,

Councillor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir and Reverend Dr Heather Morris, President of the Methodist

Church in Ireland. As a reminder of our cultural diversity, the invited audience drawn from churches, schools, language groups and the wider community will hear readings in Irish,

Ulster-Scots, Polish, Spanish and English. The event aims to demonstrate that the Bible is available for everyone, especially the younger generation for whom the smart phone is a must-have accessory.
