The Dullerton lady

A MOOOVING day for Cullion allegedy occurred at the 'tail end' of last week, when The Dullerton Lady was, apparently, erected in the hills above the village.

The problem is the giant statue, rumoured to measure around 40 feet in height, in the form of a Holstein cow, was so moooving that anyone who has been tempted to find her lofty perch on the hills around Cullion couldn’t locate her if they tried.

Rumoured to have been placed on her outdoor throne on Saturday as the campaign to get Cullion declared City of Culture 2013 builds up, the spoof Cullion 2013 website claimed the statue of the cow was surveying the countryside in majestic fashion, and it seems that the aim was to have hapless sightseers hoofing it around the back roads of the north west to get a glimpse of the mammoth milker.

One of the better spoofs you’ll see on the Internet this side of the butcher’s cleaver, the creator of the Facebook site even claimed that because of the wind speed factor in the hills over Cullion Northern Ireland Electricity had stepped in to help the Dullerton Lady team work out a way of cabling the structure securely, while volunteers from Belfast Arts Council were alleged to have worked alongside staff from Graham Construction to help bring the Dullerton Lady project to fruition. All concerned deserve a ‘pat’ on the back for their imagination.

It’s a statue to rival even the Angel of the North (outside Gateshead in England) if the site is to be believed - and the photos on the site are very convincing - but if you want to see the Dullerton Lady then start saving - you’ll need quite a bit of cash to make the trip to Salem, North Dakota in the USA where ‘Salem Sue’ was erected in 1974 at a cost of 40,000 US Dollars!

To prevent petty rivalry and not to be outdone, Sadie the Sheep, the mascot for the Cullion 2013 City of Culture Bid site, is to have a mate designed for her, and, allegedly the creators of the Cullion Facebook site have been contacted by Facebook gamers Zynga with a special offer for Farmville players, as the anonymous Cullion moderator revealed on Friday.

“It's just getting better!!! Farmville which is a game by ZYNGA as just emailed me with brilliant news - they have done a limited edition sheep on their game.. So if you play this keep an eye for the Bonus Cullion Swirl Sheep,” one said.

Quite what the ‘ram-ifications’ of all these developments will mean for the good folk of Cullion remains to be seen, but in little over a week more than 300 people have registered their support for the site - that’s double the number of subscribers since The Sentinel first drew attention to the Facebook page dedicated to all things rural in Cullion.

Indeed, the paper also features in the ‘Wall photos’, and, apparently, the Cullion cows like nothing better than their weekly read - Sentinel-style, of course!

Originally formed to harness energy and support to achieve a winning bid for UK City of Culture 2013 the mission of the Cullion team is simple ‘To put Cullion on the map!’

They are certaily doing that in grand style. If you haven’t given in yet and logged onto the site, then check it out at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001176999424#!/pages/CULLION-City-of-Culture-2013/123843684304714?ref=ts
