The Guildhall celebrates record visitor numbers

A total of 370,826 people passed through the 120-year-old landmark building since June 2013.

The building has been at the centre of city life since 1890 and following a £10 million refurbishment completed last June, has become a more vibrant and welcoming shared space for both local visitors and tourists.

Mayor of Derry Councillor Brenda Stevenson said she was delighted at the figure: “The Guildhall is the city’s most iconic building, and one which is immediately associated with the city’s profile and built heritage. Since its refurbishment the building has become a bright and open shared space, which is both a fascinating visitor attraction and a stunning venue for any public event. It has hosted weddings, concerts, craft and food fairs, and welcomed a diverse range of visitors through its doors over the past year. And the addition of both the exhibition area and the buzzing cafe has brought even more people through its doors.”

Guildhall manager Michelle Murray said the Guildhall was always at the centre of city life as a venue for public and historic events and, since its refurbishment, had become even more accessible for visitors and tourists.

“I am delighted that its significance is reflected in the footfall for the past year, and we will continue to offer a warm welcome to all who come to enjoy this beautiful space,” she said, thanking the staff for providing an exceptional visitor experience.

Last month the Guildhall scooped the award for Best Conservation Project at the biannual Royal Society of Ulster Architects awards ceremony. Architects, Consarc Design Group, were the lead consultant on the £10 million project that transformed the landmark building.
