The Heart of the Causeway!

To mark the 30th anniversary of Volunteers week, Causeway Volunteer Centre & Limavady Volunteer Centre, assisted by volunteers Mark Scott, Brenda Mee and Chris Thompson, organised a photo shoot at the Giants Causeway to celebrate and promote volunteering in the new “Causeway Coast and Glens” Council area.

access arrangements put in place by the National Trust, a number of volunteers who have disabilities were able to join in the event.

For the photograph the volunteers held a heart shaped banner to celebrate “Volunteering – the Heart of the Causeway”. Funding was made available through the Department for Social Development Innovation Fund and Jack O’Connor from DSD Voluntary and Community Unit was in attendance.

The Volunteering organisations at the event ranged from “Good Morning Roe Valley”, which provides telephone befrienders for vulnerable elderly people, Meals on Wheels LCDI volunteer drivers, to Coleraine Riding for the Disabled who provide pony riding opportunities for people with a physical or learning disability, Causeway Befrienders, Ballysally Youth and Community Group, The Glens, Roe Valley Residents and Coolessan Neighbourhood Renewal groups and many more.

The volunteers’ ages ranged from from teens to 80+ year olds and the outgoing Mayor of Limavady, Gerry Mullan, also took part on his last day in office to show his support for volunteering.

This event is one of hundreds of events which took place across Northern Ireland to celebrate the 30th anniversary.
