The Queen: A slideshow tribute

Shortly after 5.30pm this evening, Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest reigning Monarch of the UK, surpassing the reign of Queen Victoria.

To mark the occasion The Londonderry Sentinel has trawled through the archives of photographs available to make a slideshow of memorable moments from the Queen’s visit to the city in 2009.

In addition we found one from July 19, 1945, supplied to us by St Columb’s Cathedral researcher, historian and guide, Ian Bartlett, which shows The Queen when she was still Princess Elizabeth visiting the Cathedral with her parents, their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

In the photograph they are seen at the entrance to the Cathedral with the then Dean of Derry, The Very Reverend Richard King.

Our other photographs in the slideshow record the Queen during her visit to Lisneal College and Altnagelvin Area Hospital in 2009.

We hope you like the slideshow, and if you have any pictures of your own of these or any other Royal visits to the city, please feel free to share them with us, by emailing them to [email protected], or by uploading them to the Londonderry Sentinel website or Facebook page.
