'˜The Union is at stake'-Middleton's poll warning

DUP Westminster candidate Gary Middleton says the future of the union is the most important factor for unionists in tomorrow's general election.

The Foyle MLA, writing in today’s Londonderry Sentinel, says the Brexit referendum vote last June has prompted nationalists to make a border poll their number one priority in tomorrow’s vote.

“We have seen the reemergence of Gerry Adams and Sinn Fein’s radical republican agenda and the ongoing demands for a border poll,” he writes.

“The SDLP and Colum Eastwood have also been very vocal on their demand for a united Ireland whilst also attacking unionism and its traditions.

“At this election the DUP are seeking a mandate for the Union that really matters, the Union with Great Britain.”

Five candidates are standing for the Foyle Westminster seat in tomorrow’s poll.

They are: Gary Middleton (DUP), Mark Durkan (SDLP), Elisha McCallion (Sinn Fein), John Doherty (All) and Shaun Harkin (PBP).

The Ulster Unionist Party declined to field a candidate in the election.

The SDLP’s Mark Durkan is defending a majority of 4,824 from the last general election in 2015 with 16,922 votes.
