THE global spotlight was well and truly shone on Limavady and Londonderry this week with news of the passing of the Olympic flame being reported in newspapers as far away as India, China and Africa.

Londonderry received most coverage, however, for being the only area where the route had to be diverted since the Olympic flame began its journey after being lit at the foot of Mount Olympus in Greece.

Articles were carried in news outlets across the continents, with photographs of local torch-bearers such as well-known Limavady man Peter Jack and pictures of the scenic journey the torch has made since it arrived in Northern Ireland.

From ‘The Globe and Mail’ in Canada, Zeenews in India, The Citizen in East Africa, the ‘China Daily’, news.com.au in Australia, the Malaysia Star and a host of others throughout the entire world, the global spotlight has well and truly been settled on Northern Ireland for the past few days.

Numerous publications in Europe have also carried stories about the Torch’s journey through Londonderry and Limavady, aside from the big British dailies such as the Guardian and the Telegraph. The United States has also given over it’s fair share of coverage, with their big-hitting news outlets also giving plenty of space over to Londonderry’s role in the Olympic journey.
