Thefts, drugs and property damage plague Coalisland in run up to Christmas

Sinn Fein call for gratifiti to be removed

Mid Ulster Councillor Malachy Quinn said he had received reports from residents after a spate of incidents that left residents angered over recent weeks.

Police said they have increased patrols in the area, and ask that anyone who notices any suspicious behaviour to report it to them.

Speaking about issue Cllr Quinn said: “Over recent weeks I have been called out by residents about a number of different anti-social behaviour issues in Coalisland, especially around Gortgonis, Newtownkelly and Platters Hill.

“These issues have included theft, property damage and drugs all of which I raised with the PSNI in a meeting along with other SDLP representatives.

“This weekend we have a car stolen in the area which is despicable especially in the run up to Christmas.

“These incidents have left residents upset and very angry and I want to put the word out for people to be vigilant for any suspicious behaviour.

“Everyone in the town should take special care and look out for anything suspicious over the Christmas period and don’t be afraid to contact either myself or the PSNI.

“I will continue to work with the PSNI and residents groups to try and stamp out anti-social behaviour in the town.”

He continued: “Christmas is a special time for families and Coalisland as usual is looking the part as it always does yet there are always a small minority of people who are out to take advantage and cause misery for others.”

Daniel Walsh, Neighbourhood Inspector for the area, said: “We are aware of a slight increase in anti-social behaviour in the area and investigations are ongoing into any reports that have been made to police at the recent meeting with local councillors.

“To combat crime in the area high visibility patrols have been increased and we continue to talk with local people and work with community groups and councillors to gather any information that may be useful.

“I would ask anyone who is aware of any suspicious activity in their area to contact police.

“If you can get descriptions of people or details of cars involved this information will be vital in assisting us.
