Thefts from cars sparks police warning

BALLYMENA motorists are being advised by police not to leave valuables in unattended vehicles in the wake of a number of recent incidents in which property has been stolen from cars parked in the borough.

Constable Dean McAuley, the local crime prevention officer, said thieves were on the lookout for valuables left in cars.

It was also pointed out that the glove box should not be used to store away items from prying eyes but should, in fact, be left empty and open to make it clear that nothing of value is on board the vehicle.

Motorists should never leave valuables such as handbags, mobile phones, CD players, stereo systems, or satellite navigation equipment unattended inside their vehicle,” said Constable McAuley.

“These are valuable items and our advice is to take them with you when you leave the car. Some owners have got used to taking the sat-nav displays off the windscreen and putting them in the glove box. However, it is worth pointing out that thieves look for the telltale mark where the device has been attached to the windscreen and also know where people are likely to hide things.

“I would also advise motorists to give some thought to the security of the vehicle itself and would urge owners to consider the benefits of having additional anti theft devices which can be used to help deter those involved in this type of crime.

“Remember, as well, to try and park in well-populated and well-lit places,” concluded Constable McAuley.

Anyone who would like further crime prevention advice on this or any other subject is asked to contact the police at Ballymena.
