Theo (2) is creating a massive splash!

NOT content with splashing about the bathtub, Dervock toddler Theo Phillips has just completed 50 metres at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre swimming pool - aged just two years and four months!

The youngster wowed onlookers by achieving the feat last week, unaided by his mum Sharon and without the use of armbands.

Since taking the plunge earlier this summer, Theo has taken to swimming like the proverbial duck to water and is already making waves at the leisure centre.

Speaking to Niamh Burns of the Ballymoney Times, proud dad Steven said: “I only noticed Theo’s ability this summer he was so confident an at ease in the pool.

“My wife Sharon was determined to get him swimming and the two of them have been at the pool every day as past three weeks.

“In that short time Theo progressed from armbands to none.”

Steven continued: “I didn’t realise how much more confident Theo had become when it comes to swimming, he literally just take’s a massive jump into the pool and with no fear and starts swimming.

“He swam 50 metres on his back but with more determination, he should progress to swimming on his front in no time at all.

“We in Ballymoney have great facilities at the Joey Dunlop Centre, with a brilliant junior pool and not only that, it’s right on our doorstep.

“The staff are second to none, they are fantastic and they couldn’t be more be nicer or helpful” all the reception staff and pool staff say hello to Theo when he gets to the pool.

Steven said he hoped his youngest child’s efforts would inspire others to take up the sport.

“I noticed at the pool that there are a lot of older children learning to swim, and I hope that Theo will be an inspiration to them,” he said.

“If a two-year-old can swim 50 metres on their own, who’s to say that a seven-year-old can’t do the same?

“As i said, living in Ballymoney, we are very lucky to have the Joey Dunlop Centre right on our doorsteps and teaching your child to swim really is a gift for life so I would encourage anyone with a young child to find out more about lessons because one day it might just save their life and it’s a great way to keep fit”
