Thieves pilfer software, mobiles and cash from cop shops

COMPUTER games, software, mobile phones and a car wing mirror were amongst the items pilfered from PSNI stations in Londonderry over the past three years.

The total value of items stolen from police stations across the wider G District since 2007 was estimated at 1,620.

Light-fingered opportunists in the district had greatest success stealing from the Londonderry police stations at Strand Road and Waterside.

Thieves made off with four pieces of copper valued at 400 from Strand Road in February 2007. In 2008 they stole a car wing mirror and two mobile phones one of which was valued at 70.

Across the river personal accessories worth 619.98 were stolen from Waterside in May 2007. Three items of computer games/software with a total value of 500 were taken from the same station in 2008 as was another article details of which are not available.

In Strabane someone managed to make off with a quantity of petrol in 2007 whilst the theft of 30 from Magherafelt was the only recorded theft from a station in G District in 2009.

Despite the losses police in Londonderry fared better than their colleagues in West Belfast who lost a car worth 2,000 and a sun bed worth 800 in just two separate thefts.

The information was revealed by the PSNI in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request for a list of items recorded as stolen resulting from burglary, robbery or theft offences at PSNI premises

The PSNI caution that the information is based on operational data taken from a live crime recording system and may be subject to change.

The police stated that it was not possible to identify the ownership of the items stolen and some items will not directly belong to the PSNI but will have been in police possession as a result of property handed in/seizures/recoveries.
