Third Age set to dawn in the area

The University of the Third Age has set its sights on establishing a group in the Banbridge area.

To that end it is to hold a public launch meeting in Banbridge’s Old Town Hall on Monday, August 24 at 2.30pm.

Widely known as U3A, the university is a charitable organisation for retired and semi-retired people who want to keep mentally and physically fit.

Members meet together in groups on a weekly or monthly basis to pursue a wide range of interests, such as walking, book groups, learning a language, bridge and crafts.

“The possibilities are endless,” said U3A Regional Volunteer Mavis Turner.

“If you are looking for a new interest, a chance to meet others who share the same interests as you, and keep active, then you will enjoy the University of the Third Age.

“All U3As draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of its members to organise and provide interest groups at minimal costs to members.

“The U3A believes that learning and sharing of knowledge in a friendly and informal setting is for fun and pleasure, not for qualifications.

“By joining a U3A you will become a member of a growing, dynamic, outward-looking organisation which has a positive and creative approach to life after full-time work.”

The U3A now has 24 groups across Northern Ireland, with more than 6000 members.

More information is available at www.u3ani.info or by contacting Mavis Turner on 028 9079 8416.

“If you think you may be interested in joining, or helping to start a new U3A in the Banbridge area, then we would encourage you to come along to our launch meeting,” said Mavis.
