The woman suffered wounds to her hands and head, and has since undergone surgery for non-life threatening injuries.

Flowers have been left outside their business, the Double Value Chinese take-away in the town, with locals taking to social media to offer their condolences and to condemn the attack on the couple.

Police believe their vehicle was forced off the road by two other vehicles and that the couple were approached by a number of people.

Detective Chief Inspector Eamonn Corrigan said: “The couple were attacked and a sum of cash taken from them.”

He added that there was no suspicion of a hate motive.
