There are no reports of anyone being injured. The PSNI in the city are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them.

Earlier in the week pipe bombs were thrown at two houses in the city-one in the Culmore area and one close to Westland Street in the Bogside. This device had initially been undiscovered, having only partially detonated.

The alarm was raised when the vigilante group Republican Action Against Drugs said they were responsible.

Alliance Foyle candidate Keith McGrellis has condemned those behind the explosion.

"People are trying to live normal lives in these residential streets but yet these thugs think they are vigilantes and do not care who gets hurts. I hope that the whole community joins me in condemning this attack.

"They have no right to think that they can act as law enforcement, only the police can do that.

"If anybody has any information about this attack I would urge them to contact the police. I only hope that these thugs realise that they are not wanted in this area."

Meanwhile, three men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of a man in Strabane on Monday night.
