Linn Primary is the proud owner of a third “eco flag” signifying the school’s commitment to the scheme.

Teacher Margaret Kirby said that Linn Primary was awarded its first “eco flag” in 2007.

She indicated that it was the first school in the Larne area to receive the accolade.

She said that it underlined the school’s sustainability in terms of recycling and saving energy.

Pupils have been involved in recycling a wide range of items from mobile phones and ink cartridges to clothing and this is due to be extended to jewellery and electrical goods.

Thirty pupils belong to the school’s “eco” clubs and are involved in gardening projects which include growing their own vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and celery.

Meanwhile, Linn Primary has been taking part in a national celebration of child rights as a “UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School”.

As part of the project, pupils in primary four to primary seven have written to First Minister Peter Robinson and his deputy Martin McGuinness. A school council has also been established.

Principal Andrea Duff explained: “We are trying to get our pupils to realise that although they have rights, they also have a responsibility as well.

“They have written to the First Minister and Deputy First Minister to ask what rights are important to them.”
