Thirty motorists in Magherafelt given defect notices as police clampdown on anti-social driving

A PSNI spokesperson said they are aware of concerns regarding anti-social driving and are keen to address the issue. LPT (Local Policing Team) and NPT (Neighbourhood Policing Team) officers were joined by colleagues from DVA.

“Vehicle safety and road safety information was given to a number of motorists. Working with DVA, 30 defect notices were issued,” he said.

“Police issued 10 fixed penalty notices, five motorists were issued with discretionary disposals and seven were detected with having vehicle defects. During the operation, 12 motorists were given advice and guidance for a range of offences.

“Although this was a very positive step in terms of raising awareness about road safety it is clear that a number of motorists are still willing to take unnecessary risks when driving.

“As well as causing a nuisance to other road users and local residents, those involved are creating a danger for themselves. We understand the detrimental effect this behaviour has on others.”

The spokesperson added, however, that it was extremely encouraging to see a number of motorists who kept their vehicles in good order and were aware of road safety concerns.
