Thompson hosts Red Squirrel Group

Glens Sinn Fein Councillor Colum Thompson recently hosted a meeting between The Glens Red Squirrel Group and Moyle District Council’s Countryside Officer Michael McConaghy.

Speaking after the meeting Councillor Thompson said; “I arranged this meeting after members of The Glens Red Squirrel Group had raised a few concerns about the impact of our plans for Moyle’s forests on red squirrels.

“We discussed a programme of identifying areas where feeders could be moved and how best to do this so that they will be no impact on the red squirrel population.

“The Glens Red Squirrel Group do excellent conservation work and we also discussed how their work could benefit tourism in The Glens and Moyle.

“Red Squirrel playgrounds and viewing areas have been successfully introduced in a number of other areas and are proving very popular with locals and tourists alike.

“There is no reason why this can’t happen in Ballycastle, Ballypatrick and Glenariff forests as well,” he concluded.
