Thought he could drive new car to his home

On the day that he bought a car a young Portadown man thought he was entitled by law to drive it home.

But that was not the case and the six points he received last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court will mean that his licence will be revoked.

Amarildo Mendis (18), Thomas Street, Portadown, was also fined £100 for driving without insurance on June 23 this year.

As well he was fined £20 for not displaying ‘R’ plates.

Mendis told police he had just purchased the car and did not have the opportunity to purchase insurance. He had obtained his licence in April of this year and was not displaying ‘R’ plates.

A solicitor representing the defendant said he had purchased the car that day and thought he was entitled by law to drive home.

He added that Mendis accepted he should have checked and that later he did obtain insurance.
