Thought he was alright to drive after a sleep

After he fell asleep in a friend's house after a night out a 26-year-old man thought he was fit to drive when he woke up.

But he came to the attention of the police and a breath test showed that he was well over the drink driving limit.

Conor Sean Michael McAlinden, Sloan Street, Lurgan, was banned from driving for 12 months last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for an excess alcohol offence.

He was also fined £200.

If he completes a course for drink driving the ban would be reduced to nine months.

The court heard that on December 20 last year McAlinden was seen driving in Union Street, Lurgan.

The car was crossing the white line and police spoke to him he appeared dazed and his speech was slurred.

There was also a smell of intoxicating liquor on his breath and an evidential test gave a reading of 95 - the legal limit is 35.

A barrister representing the defendant said he had been out with friends and at 11 o’clock went back to his friend’s home where he went to sleep.

She explained that he woke up in the early hours of the morning and felt that he was fit to drive. The houses were only streets apart.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said it was quite a high reading.

The barrister said her client had done nothing like this before. He thought he was all right to drive but clearly he wasn’t all right.
