Thought he was insured

After assuming his mother had added him to her insurance a 23-year-old man took her car but police inquiries revealed he was not covered.

Darren Adamson, Willowfield, Tandragee, was fined £250 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving without insurance on January 23 this year. He was also given six points.

Police checks had revealed he was not on the insurance policy. Adamson believed this was a mistake. At a later date he produced insurance at Armagh police station which showed he was not insured.

A solicitor representing the defendant said this was his mother’s vehicle and she had made an arrangement to put him on the insurance. He added that this could not be done because although she attended with the insurance company Adamson also needed to be present.

The solicitor explained that the defendant assumed he had been put on the insurance and took the car. It was a genuine mistake. He said that Adamson had been driving for six years with a clear record.
