Thought-provoking talk on global warming

ENVIRONMENTAL landscaper and permaculture expert Phillip Allen gave a thought-provoking talk at a public meeting in Larne on global warming and the impact climate change will have on local weather patterns.

This, he told the audience, could lead over time to invasive species from warmer regions of the globe displacing our native flora and fauna.

Taking the audience back in time, Philip explained how the industrial revolution led to a mindset which considered the natural world a resource to be exploited, and how traditional, small scale, sustainable agriculture has developed into agro-business with factory farming processes leading to soil nutrient depletion and decreased biodiversity.

He explained that we need to live harmoniously with the environment, and utilise nature’s resources without over-exploiting them, by supporting renewable energy, and building sustainable housing.

The meeting, hosted by Larne Friends of the Earth, was held in Larne Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club.
