Three ordinations at Bready Reformed Church

BREADY Reformed Church celebrated the ordination of three men to the office of Deacon, Douglas McMorris, Christopher and Jonathan Roulston, on Sunday, January 27.

The minister of the congregation, Rev Blair McFarland, welcomed all present and introduced Rev Knox Hyndman, the guest preacher for the day.

The Mr Hyndman preached the sermon based on the perfect example of service given by Christ as he washed the disciples’ feet (John 13: 1 – 17).

This was particularly applied to the Deacons-elect, but also to every Christian, as all believers are called to serve the Lord.

The Mr Hyndman spoke first of the love which should prompt service, and which prompted Christ to wash the disciples’ feet; all service in the Kingdom must be done out of love for Christ.

He spoke secondly of the humility which characterizes service and challenged us with the question “Do I have a servant’s heart?” Thirdly, he talked of the faith that sustains service; faithful servants will be blessed, for example with great assurance of faith, and spiritual fruit and growth.

Mr Douglas McMorris, Mr Christopher Roulston and Mr Jonathan Roulston were then ordained and installed as Deacons of the Bready Congregation by Mr McFarland who then addressed the congregation and deacons.

When Jesus was on earth his ministry had two sides to it. He taught about God and salvation and he also cared for the physical needs of the people he met. The work of Deacons involves the oversight of the material needs of the congregation, just as the Elders oversee the spiritual needs. This ministry of mercy (caring for the practical needs) extends not only to the members of the congregation but also to those outside.

In closing, Mr McFarland pointed to the encouragement of 1 Corinthians 15, verse 58, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labour is not in vain.”

The new deacons were welcomed to their office and the service was followed by a delicious congregational lunch in the Church Hall, which was enjoyed by congregation and visitors alike.
