Threw cones around station

His solicitor said he had been celebrating after a football match and it had gone on too long.

Richard Halliday (30),whose address was given as Charles Baron Mews, Lurgan, admitted three charges when he appeared last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

For assaulting a constable on August 29 this year he was fined £250 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months for disorderly behaviour and resisting a constable.

The court heard that at 5.20am security staff at Lurgan police station saw the defendant throwing cones about outside the station.

He had a cone in his hands which he was swinging around when police went to speak to him.

Halliday was abusive to police and was arrested for disorderly behaviour.

He became aggressive and had to be taken to the ground.

He struggled and had to be handcuffed.

While he was being escorted to the station he tried to head-butt an officer.

Mr Felim Rafferty, representing the defendant, said Halliday was extremely intoxicated and had very little recollection of what happened.

He added that his client was extremely remorseful and contrite and it was a case of the ‘drink being in and the wit being out’.

Mr Rafferty explained that Halliday had been coming from a football match and the celebrations went on too long.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, the most serious aspect was the assault on the police officer but no contact was made.
