It teaches personal survival skills, under the auspices of the Swimming Teachers Association UK and also covers a 1500m and Rookie Lifeguard badge.

This year the club was sponsored by Dee and Jackie Wright of Spar Whitehead and on the awards night, held in St Patrick’s Church parochial hall, Dee presented the badges and trophies. In a statement, the club said it was “most grateful for their generosity and support and hope it will continue in the future”.

Of the 84 members, 76 passed their badge test and eight gained a distance badge. There are 10 different badges: Minors (Minor Pool), Juniors, Cadets, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Merit, Distance, 1500m and Rookie Lifeguard.

The trophies are awarded to the swimmers by means of a points system from 1 to 10, for good behaviour, badge work and attendance, on each club night. The swimmer with the highest total at the end of the season comes first and they get a trophy to hold for a year. All first, second and third swimmers each received a club medal to keep - 42 medals were presented.

The top swimmers in 2014 were Meghan Hamilton who was awarded The Captain’s Cup and Adam Mahood who was awarded the President’s Cup. The club extended thanks to the coaches for giving freely of their time.
