Tight lipped on plans

THE MAYOR, Jim Carson, remained tight lipped on plans to demolish large sections of Lurgan to make way for a new road link with Craigavon in July 1976.

The mayor declined to comment on plans to demolish Albert Street, Garland Avenue, Lough Road, Victoria Street, part of William Street and Brownlow Terrace.

The scheme was planned to make way for the a major road scheme that would link the town with Craigavon.

Mr Carson said: "There is a tentative plan for roadworks in that area but I am not in a position to disclose what has been suggested."

Parts of Queen Street, however, were to undergo a facelift.
