Time for change to pre-school policy - Storey

DUP Chairman of the Education Committee Mervyn Storey has said it is wrong that children from homes where parents receive unemployment benefits are being prioritised over parents in employment for pre-school places.

Commenting Mr Storey said: “As a party we believe that is it good for people to work.

However, this policy in the Department of Education actually discourages employment.

“It is wrong that parents are being disadvantaged simply because they have a job. Rather than promoting employment, this policy will put jobs at risk.

“Many hard-working families are struggling to make ends meet and when they are faced with discriminatory policies such as this they will understandably question the value of being in work. This is a bad policy and the Department

should move with urgency to address it.”
