Time to get talking about ‘Women in the Church’

THEY may traditionally be seen as the people who arrange the flowers or make tea for parish events, but these days the role of women in the Catholic Church extends to much, much more.

They chair Parish Pastoral Councils, sit on Finance Committees, act as Ministers of the Eucharist and the Word and engage in preparation of people for baptism in the church.

Not surprisingly, the role of women in the Catholic Church has been the subject of discussion and even debate for some time and it will be the theme of a round table gathering in All Saints Parish Church on May 11 from 2-5pm which is open to all.

The afternoon will provide an opportunity for everyone to come and listen to keynote speaker and noted author and journalist, Joanna Bogle, and other speakers, Baroness Nuala O’Loan and Fr Patrick Delargy PP.

Those who attend will also be able to engage in discussions on the topics “What is it like to be a woman in the Church?” and “What do women in the Church want today?”

The organisers hope that this meeting, which will be facilitated by Janice McKeith, will be an opportunity for people to explore ways in which women can most effectively and usefully put all their talents at the service of the Gospel and the Church and share their experiences of being women in the Catholic Church today.

There will be no charge and tea/coffee and tray-bakes will be served.
