Time to lighten up, says father

STREET-LIGHTING in Banbridge is inadequate, according to one concerned local father.

The 56-year-old Lenaderg man raised the issue after what he said were persistent periods when streetlights have not worked in the town centre’s main streets during the past year-and-a-half.

“The lights at the Old Town Hall side of the street haven’t been working for about a fortnight,” he said. “Last week the lights round the Methodist Church and the Old Tech weren’t working. It’s not good enough.”

The man, who has a daughter aged 25, said he is not only concerned for her safety but also for his own.

“I don’t like the idea of her walking in the dark on her own at night,” he said. “And I wouldn’t really be keen to do so myself either.

“At Christmas you have all these lights up everywhere, but it really takes away from the look of it all when the street lights don’t work,” he added.

A spokesperson for Roads Service said, "Any lights that have been reported as not working in Bridge Street over the past year have been repaired. Currently there is one light which is not working in Bridge Street and Roads Service is liaising with NIE to get this resolved."
