Titanic building furnished by Ardboe business

ANOTHER local business benefiting from the Titanic tourism craze is Ardboe furniture-makers, GMT who have produced a range of tables and chairs for the new Titanic Signature building in Belfast.

The company have produced tables and chairs for a cafe and bistro in the new building, which opens on 31 March for the Titanic Festival and is expected to receive 400,000 visitors each year.

Two styles of furniture have been produced to be installed in the cafe and bistro. Both traditional in style, 85 white chairs with stainless steel bottoms and 46 tables with a butcher block top were created for the cafe; and 150 black chairs with wooden sock detail with 45 tables of varying size created for the bistro.

Gerry Mallon (58) and his son Thomas (33) are joint directors of GMT, and they supply commercial businesses across Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Thomas Mallon said: “Getting the contract was great, especially with the prestige of a job like this one, we hope it will advertise our work and help us in the future.

“There are a few hotels in the pipeline for the Titanic Quarter, but we are confident that we could be in the running for some contracts there.”

The company was established in 1994 by Gerry, from Ardboe, who worked as an upholsterer for around 40 years. Locally they have provided furniture for the Back Door bar in Maghera, Shenanigans in Portstewart and Gardiners restaurant in Magherafelt.
