Tourism Minister, Arlene Foster, said: “The centenary of Titanic’s fateful voyage and its unique history continues to make the Titanic legend compelling for millions of people across the world. However, as we rightfully celebrate the incredible feat of engineering and human endeavour which lies behind the building of the ship, at the heart of this story is the major loss of life which makes this story so tragic.

“The enormity of the tragedy has had a lasting impact on the relatives who lost loved ones and all of those involved in building the remarkable ship. As we mark the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of Titanic, a number of commemorative events will take place over the next few days to remember all of those who tragically died.

“These events, along with the new Titanic Memorial Garden at Belfast City Hall, will allow us all to pay our respects to those who lost their lives.”

Other commemorative events taking place include: a Titanic Requiem at St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, on 14 April followed by a candlelit procession to the newly opened Titanic Memorial Garden at Belfast City Hall. A major BBC event ‘Titanic Centenary Commemoration’ will be held in the Waterfront Hall on 14 April. The 90-minute show, which will be broadcast live on BBC, retells the story of the legendary liner.
