Titanic survivors to be honoured with Ballymoney headstone

BALLYMONEY Borough Council has agree to waive the usual fee and honour the resting place of Titanic survivors who lived and worked in the town.

During a recent Leisure and Amenities Committee meeting, members heard that a local firm had offered to provide a headstone to identify the grave at Ballymoney Cemetery where Wilfred and Lylla Seward are interred.

The report explained: ‘An approach has been received from a local firm offering to provide an “all polished black granite marker” to identify the grave at Ballymoney Cemetery.

‘It is recommended that Council accept the generous offer made and waive the usual fee in this particular instance.’

It was proposed by Alderman Bill Kennedy, seconded by Alderman Cecil Cousley and agreed that Council accept the offer.

Cllr Ian Stevenson said he was glad that the ‘Seward’ memorial had been offered by a local funeral director adding: ‘I’m glad we are able to mark a Titanic survivor who lived and worked in Ballymoney’.
