Tons of rubbish illegally dumped in Loughgiel

Last Wednesday morning two council workmen spent several hours removing the debris which included rubble, plastic sheeting as well as the black wrapping and mesh material used while harvesting barley straw.

The rubbish had been lying for weeks and had been causing concern amongst passers by who not only felt it was unsightly but also that is showed a complete lack of respect for the countryside.

One man commented: “Whoever dumped this didn’t just come along with a few bags in the back of a car. The rubbish had to be taken there on a large trailer and then tipped off. You would imagine they couldn’t have used a shovel as it would have taken time and they would have stood a good chance of being seen.

“Dumping it was bad enough but to leave it at the side of the road was worse. They had no regard for health and safety.”

A spokesperson for Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council said: “Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council received a number of complaints about this particular location and the amount of fly tipping which had taken place.

“This is a fineable offence and Council officers will be investigating any complaints and information they receive. On this occasion, Council lifted and cleared the area which had a significant amount of rubbish left on it.

“Fly tipping is not acceptable and it upsets residents and visitors who witness it. Council welcome any information received from the community on this or any other instances of fly tipping in the Borough.”
