Took chance when mother needed help

When his mother needed his help a 55-year-old man took a chance and rode a motorcycle although he had no insurance.

Derek Johnston, Ulster Avenue, Rathfriland, was fined £100 last Thursday at Banbridge Magistrates Court for the offence on October 8.

He was also banned for three months and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy. For not having a licence he was fined £25 and given a concurrent two month disqualification and he was fined £25 for not having a vehicle test certificate.

The court heard he was detected riding the motorcycle at 11.40am on the Loughbrickland Road, Rathfriland.

A solicitor representing the defendant said his mother had locked herself in her house and Johnston foolishly took the motorcycle to go and help her.

She added that he had bought the machine as a project to restore it.
