Toome student wins £25K scholarship from NIE

The scholarship package, which is worth £25K, includes financial support as well as the opportunity to spend a year’s placement and each summer working for the Company.

Margaret is a past pupil of St Mary’s Grammar School in Magherafelt and is in the first year of her studies at Queen’s University. Margaret will be working with Northern Ireland Electricity this summer.

Delighted with the scholarship, Margaret said: ‘I am delighted to have been awarded a scholarship by Northern Ireland Electricity.

“It is great to not only get financial support during my studies but also to have the opportunity to put the theory I learn in the degree into practice, through work placements with the Company.’

Dr David McNeill, Assistant Director of Education for Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Queens said: “I would like to congratulate Margaret on receiving this scholarship and wish her all the best in her future career as an electrical engineer.

“Today we face global challenges to provide clean, green energy for all and electrical engineering will be the key to delivering this, so Margaret is joining the profession at an exciting and challenging time.’

Northern Ireland Electricity launched the scholarship scheme in 2011 as a means of recruiting good graduates into their Electrical Engineering Graduate Scheme.

NIE have alsosaid there is currently a shortage of electrical engineering graduates in Northern Ireland and throughout the UK, as they are in high demand, not only in the power industry, but areas as diverse as IT and connected health.
